Your attention is not a product.

The modern internet was largely built around one insight: human attention can be captured, measured, and sold. We think that was the wrong foundation to build on.

How we got here.

The advertising model seemed like a gift at the time. Free products, funded by brands who wanted to reach people. No subscription, no friction, no credit card required. The internet would be open and accessible to everyone.

What it required in return was attention. And to sell attention, you need to capture it first. So platforms got very good at capturing it — better than anyone expected, and in ways that had real consequences.

When attention is the product, the product is designed to be addictive. That's not an accident. It's the business model.

What that model optimizes for.

Platforms funded by advertising are optimized for engagement. Engagement sounds neutral — it just means people are using the product. But in practice, the content that drives the most engagement is often the content that is most emotionally provocative. Outrage, fear, tribalism, and novelty all perform well.

This is not a conspiracy. It is just the math of the business model at scale. When attention is the currency, the algorithms learn to provoke the emotions that generate the most of it.

A different model.

Conch is funded by subscriptions. When you pay for a service, the product works for you. We have no reason to keep you inside the app longer than you want to be. We have every reason to make your time in Conch feel worth it.

No ads. No behavioral tracking. No attention economy. Just a communication platform that serves the people who use it.
