Subscription vs. advertising: two very different relationships.

When you pay for a product, that product works for you. When advertising pays for a product, the product works for advertisers. The business model is not a technical detail — it shapes everything.

Who the product serves.

This is the most important question you can ask about any software product: who is the customer? In an advertising model, the customer is the advertiser. You are the inventory. The product is built to keep you engaged because engaged users are worth more to advertisers.

In a subscription model, you are the customer. The product is built to be worth paying for. Those are completely different incentive structures, and they produce completely different products.

The business model is not a footnote. It is the architecture of everything that follows.

What changes when you subscribe.

When you subscribe to Conch, we have a direct relationship with you. Our revenue comes from you finding Conch worth the cost — not from selling your data or your attention to someone else. That alignment matters.

We do not need you to spend more time in the app. We do not need to show you content designed to trigger engagement. We need you to feel like Conch is genuinely useful and worth keeping. That is a much better foundation for building a product that respects people.

The tradeoff.

Subscription means Conch is not free. We think that is an honest tradeoff. Free products funded by advertising are not actually free — you pay with your data, your attention, and increasingly your time and mental health. The cost of a subscription is just more legible.
